Eel

Latin name - Anguilla anguilla.

The family Anguillidae consists of members with an unusual, snake- like body. The most common species is the European eel, witch has been introduced for propagation purposes to all continents permanently inhabited by man. The mysteries of its life already studied by ancient scholars, but real answers were not found until the 20th century. A cathadromous, migratory carnivore, it leaves freshwater for the sea in the spewing season.
Only a few decades ago were its spawning grounds traced in sufficient detail to 17 ° C isothermal areas of the Sargasso Sea. Its larvae (known by the name “ elvers” ), caught on coast and in rivers, are raised in characteristic, circular tanks on European farms. For the sake of anglers, the European eel has been introduced into numerous natural waters. Although its role is considered contradictory by conservationists, its artificial dispersal cannot possibly be halted, for 90% of its 50-100 cm (20-40 in) long body is considered edible, and is a valuable product very much sought after. Prepared smoke and pickled, it is one of the most expensive delicacies in European cuisine.
